Last night close to 28 people met at Carleton Village Hall to watch ‘Sell Off.’ The crowd funded film about the dismantling of the NHS in the words of the director..
Corporate interests rather than patient care is driving reform in today’s NHS and will divert money away from YOU. And the media are failing to tell you this.
This film is radical. With over a dozen NHS insiders as my witnesses, I tell the alarming story of how the health service as we know it has been quietly abolished. Almost without our noticing, it’s been replaced by a system modelled on the US in which care is delivered by profit-maximising companies that charge patients for treatment which is anyway to be restricted and reduced. One medical reporter the filmmaker knows claims that health reporting today is so poor because few journalists have real sources inside the NHS. Well, this film has a riot of medical sources – including one professor, two consultant radiologists, a cancer expert, a public interest lawyer, and several outspoken GPs. What they all say will be shocking, unusual and brave. Our doctors really strike back in this one.
We had thought it would possibly be a bit heavy and we would need a break at half time, but a quick pause and the answer was a decisive ‘No’ so we carried on. We were all riveted.
Peter Bach asks us to share it with 10 other people. To that end, we hope to show it at other places in the area. Judith and I thought Cracoe and Settle. Anyone want to pick up the bat and show it in a hall near them or in their home? I have the CD. It can also be obtained free, although a £6 donation is suggested. http://www.selloff.org.uk/nhs/default.html It can also be watched on you tube using the same link.
While we are on the topic of ‘youtube’ you can get totally up to date (Sell Off was published Nov 2014) by watching ‘Bring back the NHS’ https://www.youtube.com/playlist list=PLckWfCEcTJ37mYlPBrNfju1NlxxNAr44D This is presented as 25 clips which you can elect to watch individually or end to end. The meeting was held this April in Central Hall and was presented by Ian McKellan. I have spent much of this morning watching extracts – the whole thing is excellent.
Don’t forget if you are showing it in a hall then they will need audio visual equipment, or you will need to provide it. Perhaps someone in the group can do this? Carleton had the equipment and fortunately it’s own guardian angel Steve, who declared my mac useless with his equipment and went home to return with and then set up his own dvd player. He really did save the day, as not long before I left home, I decided that maybe I should have tried the DVD, so I did and for whatever reason I could only get the sound! Lessons for me! Judith said she would have prompted me to try it but didn’t want to teach ‘Granny to suck eggs!’ I think Antonia must have been entertained by our conversation – the ‘blag it’ Viv and the careful, but now panicked Judith! So very grateful thanks to Steve.
Grateful thanks also to Jude who opened up and brought refreshments and Ali who came early to help. Also to all who helped move furniture and indeed all who attended the event.
Donations covered the cost of the hall and refreshments and I was able to send a £20 donation to the ‘Sell Off’ fund.
